Description

In these days of polarised politics, of war against woke, or of tearing down statuesm it is often expected that one accepts only one version of the truth (one that is politically aligned with their own outlook) at the expense of rational and nuanced consideration. In the case of Gladstone both statements above can be true. Gladstone can be a friend to the whisky industry and a beneficiary of slavery. On the nose: Very fruity, light texture, orange leaves, Starburst sweets, some red fruits, bergamot, sherry sweetness is modern and balanced. An significant leap forward, although the palate does show its age with tannins and a woody sourness creeping in. If anything this proves the potential of the distillery at a high age. Also available from The Whisky Exchange. The Scottish Oak programme is about more than the sawmill and the distillery, it is every aspect of Whisky making – From forest to field to Fettercairn” William Gladstone’s views on slavery and the slave trade have received little attention from historians, although he spent much of his early years in parliament dealing with issues related to that subject. His stance on slavery echoed that of his father, who was one of the largest slave owners in the British West Indies, and on whom he was dependent for financial support. Gladstone opposed the slave trade but he wanted to improve the condition of the slaves before they were liberated. In 1833, he accepted emancipation because it was accompanied by a period of apprenticeship for the ex-slaves and by financial compensation for the planters.”

On the nose: Burnt sugar, modern seasoned sherry casks, treacle, date puree, raisins, hints of tropical fruits, new sneakers, orange peel. Do you ever consider how you may be remembered? For some of us it may be for voluntary service, professional achievement, or perhaps just warmly within the confines of our own family. Those who have reached great heights through business success or public office are often aware of the eventual eulogising that may follow them.

Perhaps more questionable is the suggestion that at the height of the success of Shand’s distillery with his experimental stills, Nethermill distillery installed Shand’s design of still in 1832: If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. First maturation was in a mix of first fill and refill American white oak bourbon casks and then the final maturation was in 100% Scottish oak casks Set in the wilds of the untamed Eastern Highlands at the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, Fettercairn begins life in an isolated location that’s allowed this Scotch whisky to hone its own distinctive taste and characteristics uninterrupted over time. Not one that I would recommend, especially given the price, but if you fancy a challenge, head over to The Whisky Exchange. I prefer the 12 Year Old to be honest. We deliver to a number of international destinations including the USA. Finish…A drying oakyness, the tropical fruits are slowly going away, creamy banana coffee cake and a medium sweet finish Taste: Nutty, dark chocolate, very oaky, layers of oak spices and muted orchard fruits, cinnamon bark, blood orange, toasted oak, French polish, dry and tannic finish. Conclusions:

In the mouth: Light and fruit with a heavier mid-palate like highland toffee, a gentle spiced finish with a buttery or custard-like texture. Conclusions: Fettercairn has four stills, two wash stills and two spirit stills. There is an unconventional cooling system to lower the temperature of the spirit stills, they have cooling rings which stream cold water down the exterior of the stills. These examples demonstrate why it can be difficult to settle on a particular view of an individual or historical character without remaining open to future evidence that will paint a less favourable picture. Here I present William Gladstone, British Prime Minister during the critical period of the abolition of slavery and the legitimisation and licencing of the Scotch whisky industry. Fettercairn village has a further association with Slavery and Whisky via William Shand, who started distilling in the 1820s. The exact location of this lost distillery remains unknown. Shand used his experience of making rum on his brother John’s sugar plantations in Jamaica and his own estates and is noted having “experience of managing 18,000 to 20,000 enslaved people in his time in Jamaica between 1791 and 1823.”

Mouth: weakish, and again with a strange combination of flavours. Apricots yoghurt, waxy notes and honey. Fermenting fruits. Stale beer. Then walnuts and the bitterness of chestnuts. A funky perfumy / synthetic edge as well. The new headliner is the Fettercairn 50 Years, distilled 11th June 1966. It spent the final few years in a Tawny Port cask #1. Fettercairn is a pure spirit which is crafted by its unique stills and forged through temperate maturation. Within its process, the distillery uses a unique irrigator ring that surrounds the stills which drenches the still to deliver only the purest spirit. In recent years, they have been experimenting with flavours from wood charring, with whisky aged in barrels made from locally sourced oaks. [2]

This is the value offering of the range; lashings of juicy fruit balanced by oak spices and the gentle enhancement of sherry casks. Score: 6/10 Fettercairn 28 year old seems to love water – it’s therefore a shame its delivered at 43% ABV, which gives the imbiber little room to manoeuvre. Whilst there’s a good interplay between fruit and wood – and balance along with it – the level of odd funk/rancio (rotting flowers) really does detract away from both the maturity and the more defined aromatic aromas/flavours. It’s also crazy expensive for a 28 year old from a little known distillery. On the land next to the Fettercairn Distillery, 13,000 oak saplings have been planted. A total of 109 farmers signed up to help assist with the project and the nearby Fasque Sawmill. We move over to the 40 Year Old, distilled 23rd of December 1977. It spent the final few years in a Gonzalez Byass Apostoles Palo Cortado cask #6 (which is technically not a Palo Cortado but a Medium sherry as it is sweetened with a little Pedro Ximénez).
