There are a lot of characters to get your head around too and some of them change their names which gets confusing. Her Last Holiday is a chillingly plausible tale of why you should never, ever go on a wellness retreat. I found that I liked Jenna and Fran almost immediately, and warmed to several of the other players too, even changing my mind completely about Tom. After serving two years for those two deaths, Tom is released and Kate is ready to restart their business by doing another retreat. Thank you to Avon Books UK and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been a fan of CL Taylor from her first thriller but think this one is one of the best – brilliantly flawed characters – almost no one can be trusted. Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. And I was worried when I struggled to make it through the first half due to the slow, boring pace that I had made the wrong choice. Kate is obsessed, Fran is utterly negative, her mother is manipulative in the extreme, Jenna is irritating, Tom is wet, and the others are flat stereotypes.

This is a perfect holiday read with a plot that is easy to follow yet testing enough to deliver many surprises. If that wasn’t stressful enough, being unable to tell friend from foe pushed the tension through the roof and there were times I felt anxious for Fran. Both of the characters keep secrets and as they discover more lies of each other’s, they never hesitate to use them as leverage.

The plot, while not new, could have shone, but the story suffered from too many incidences of questionable behaviour from extremely early on, causing my suspension of disbelief to hang by a frayed knicker elastic. So, what does Fran’s mother do, when she learns that Tom Wade has been released after serving his two year prison sentence, and that he will be running another retreat? Fran Fitzgerald is a teacher with attitude and Tom Wade from SoulShrink was the last person to see her much younger sister Jenna alive! I found the first half more interesting, we were learning more about Fran’s family, Tom, and what happened two years ago.Every time I came up with a possible fate for Jenna, the author swiftly performed some unseen Judo move and swept my feet from under me. Prepare yourself for the latest nail-shredding, heart-in-mouth rollercoaster ride from the Sunday Times bestseller. On paper it doesn't sound like a lot is going on but under the surface you do get a fair amount of interesting narration from Fran, Kate, and Jenna.

Suspicious deaths, missing sister at a wellness retreat, mental gurus or charlatans with deep secrets, dysfunctional family members who are obsessed to know what really happened the daughter/ sister, narrated by three different vivid women characters, alternating between past and present: this formula truly worked for me! Tom Wade, the public face of SoulShrink is about to be released from prison after serving two years following tragedies at his last retreat in Gozo. There’s no way I would feel comfortable in going along to an event run by a man who has just served time in prison for being responsible for two deaths. While sister’s dynamics usually interest me, having a sister myself, I simply couldn’t like it here. She hears he’s been released and running a new retreat so books Fran a place on it so that she can investigate just what happened to her. So when Tom Wade is released from prison and runs another retreat for Soul Shrink, Jenna’s Sister Fran decides that she is going to get answers.

Fran’s sister Jenna went missing two years ago while she was on a wellness retreat at Gozo, the police told them she may have committed suicide but her mother wants answers and pushes Fran to go to Wales on a wellness retreat. She meets the couple Kate and Tom who ran the retreat in Gaza along with three others who were also there. The man behind the retreats, Tom Wade was recently released from prison after serving his sentence for the deaths of two people. Why would a mother send her other daughter, actually why would said daughter agree, to go to a retreat where her sister Jenna was possibly murdered?
