About this deal

And despite herself, she finds his corny jokes, his movie obsessions and his love for life addictive.

There’s also a rant that takes up at least a page on a half describing why romance movies are dangerous (which I totally think they can be, they set unrealistic ideals and there’s often an underrepresentation of real relationships on screen. I understand that this story is primarily about how women should not be so fixated on the happy ever after that happens in romantic comedies. The subjects are pretty much the same - friendship, love, problems with parents, feminism -, but there is something new and fresh in her narrative style, something better. Bad boys turned good, kisses in the rain, climbing through bedroom windows… It only happens in the movies. But, while I was reading it, I felt that Holly Bourne was so determined to counter the entire rom-com movies system, that storylines and characters didn't get their due justice.

Olive qualifies for the trial period of Camp Reset before it’s rolled out officially and it’s here we really get to learn about Olive and how maybe, just maybe, society is the problem and all we’re lacking is a little kindness in this troubled world.

At turns funny, feminist, and achingly real, this read is perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Patrick Ness, and Julie Buxbaum.

The next few lines are spoilers for the end of the book, but I can't in good conscience not mention something that is so deeply problematic to me: Audrey and Harry's relationship is very off again, on again, and what finally kills it is when she found out that he got a blow job by a girl Audrey was jealous of, and they split up. I love that this book breaks the stereotypes of traditional romances and I applaud every decision that was made my Audrey in the book, even the final one, but that doesn’t mean that longing for things to have turned out differently. There are still some releases in September I want to get my hands on so a trip to Waterstones may be needed! With each lovestory cliché that DOES come up, there is a twist and turn you didn't necessarily see coming. She has to balance her work life and aspiration for a career in politics, with her passion for feminism and changing the world. Holly is an advocate for reducing the stigma around mental health problems and has a keen interest in women’s rights. It’s actually a blatant deconstructive analysis of romantic movies proving that real life romance is completely different. The first in a duology, this tome holds some of the best description I’ve ever read with such brilliantly constructed characters.
