It took us about 25 minutes to inflate the kayak with our own breath and a foot pump, so by time our bright blue kayak was ready to go we were pretty worn out - but ship’s ahoy sailors, if you’ve got this far you are best to board.On this kayak outing into the heart of the Essex River basin, we will be paddling in the protected waters of the Crane Wildlife Refuge, one of the most scenic sections of the Great Marsh—the largest contiguous salt marsh in New England. We’ll land on Long Island and take a short hike to a hilltop that overlooks the tide marsh that interconnects the islands.

Bring a synthetic jacket as temperature can change frequently and it is nice to have a layer you can add if the temps cool off. The Tidal Crane Association is a residents’ group which cares for the tidal stretch of the River Crane between the Northcote Road footbridge to the Thames at Isleworth. While many of our programs are geared toward a general audience, we also offer a number of family programs that are geared toward families with children under age 12 (look for “CraneExplorer” as part of the event name). These islands provide a haven for wildlife and have a rich cultural history spanning from when Native Americans summered on these shores, harvesting the shellfish for which this area is known, to their purchase by Chicago industrialist Richard T.
