About this deal

In 1997, Violette and Philippe Toussaint arrived in Bourgogne to become the cemetery keepers at Brancion-en-Chalon Cemetery. The stories of many of these individuals overlap with Violette’s, creating a mysterious tale that is quite wondrous in the manner in which all is revealed. Very much a quiet book, Fresh Water for Flowers has a great wisdom, each chapter opening with a magical quotation that forces the reader to stop and to take a moment. It doesn’t always happen this way and sometimes I feel as though I miss out from not reading the story in its original language.

She is the translator of A Winter’s Promise and The Missing of Clairdelune, atmospheric, absorbing tale. Fresh Water for Flowers is about her choosing otherwise, eventually, which happens because the mother of a man named Julien Seul asked for her ashes to be placed on the tomb of a man he, Julien, doesn’t know. Valérie Perrin gives us something a little different here while exploring grief and loss by using a cemetery as the setting. A recluse in a way, at night when it’s quiet and the people she interacts, with the gravediggers - Nono, Gaston, Elvis , the undertakers - the Lucchini brothers and the priest Cedric have left for the day. She knows her quiet neighbors’ birth and death dates and often much of the story of what came in between; she tends affectionately to their graves, watering, weeding, cleaning.

Ogni nuovo ospite è accompagnato dal sigillo del suo destino, la causa che ne ha provocato la morte, la sentenza dei medici. Violette’s routine is disrupted one day by the arrival of a man—Julien Seul, local police chief—who insists on depositing the ashes of his recently departed mother on the gravesite of a complete stranger. Fresh Water for Flowers is a book that is too easy to spoil and I'm proud that as of this writing all of the top reviews are by GR Friends of mine and not one has a spoiler. I have no problem with explicit sex yet here I found less was more in a way that was, well, gratifying. But Violette finds an advertisement for cemetery keepers in Bourgogne, which comes with an all-expenses-paid house, and the couple soon have new employment.

Not that I ever found it well written but some of it was charming, whimsical, ridiculously sentimental. Violette and Philippe are soon living in a small house in a French town, working as level crossing keepers.I purchased this in Kindle format but I think I may now get myself a physical copy just to have to hand on my bookshelves! After working as a newspaper subeditor in London for many years, she obtained the Chartered Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation. Jedna z tych zwykłych-niezwykłych historii, które ni stąd, ni zowąd dotykają człowieka do samej głębi.
