About this deal

Liverpool Playhouse to Present The Haunting of Hill House". Broadway World . Retrieved October 20, 2015. The Banishing– 2020 – Jessica Brown Findlay ( Downton Abbey) stars in this Yorkshire-based haunted house mystery. When a young family moves into a manor house, it’s not long before they realise the building has some dark secrets. The film is set in the 1930s and it was filmed around Skipton, North Yorkshire. AMC+ or Shudder. The Little Stranger There’s some nice photography throughout, although the filmmakers don’t make the most of the Yorkshire setting, mainly focussing on the house and grounds, which are still eerily impressive.

All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events. Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and it is implied that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. Another implied possibility is that Eleanor possesses a subconscious telekinetic ability that is itself the cause of many of the disturbances experienced by her and the others, which might indicate there is no ghost in the house at all. This possibility is suggested especially by references early in the novel to Eleanor's childhood memories about episodes of a poltergeist-like entity that seemed to target her home. This film is just one big bundle of bubble wrapped cliché! The performance by the main actress wasn't too bad and I thought she did her best to carry a weak script. A poor script which was further hampered by some dodgy acting from her kids and husband who was as wooden as a garden shed. I was literally cringing at the amount of horror movie clichés in this film. I was half expecting the possessed husband to start screaming 'Here's Johnny, at one point. Channel 5’s Christmas drama The Haunting Of Radcliffe House will premiere on Saturday December 27th at 9:35pm, it has been announced. The house's two caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley, refuse to stay near the house at night. The four overnight visitors begin to form friendships as Montague explains the building's history, which encompasses suicide and other violent deaths. Later in their stay, the doctor's wife, the haughty Mrs. Montague, and her companion Arthur Parker, the headmaster of a boys' school, arrive to spend a weekend at Hill House and help investigate it. They, too, are interested in the supernatural, including séances and spirit writing. Unlike the other four characters, they do not experience anything supernatural, although some of Mrs. Montague's alleged spirit writings seem to communicate with Eleanor. Nazare, Joe (February 2010). A young family move to an isolated house which the mother has been hired to restore only to discover that presences still linger casting a hold over her artist sculpturing husband. The production and acting are quality (how old is Modine - doesn't look good from certain angles), so the director's screenplay has to take the blame. Ghost stories are all about dark secrets, but this one skipped that part of the process. Creepy noises and strange sounds abound. Ghosts make their appearance early and often and in various forms. In an interesting way the form of the spirit seemed to be a function of the spirits intent, a refreshing take amongst the tried and true ghost forms that are used. In Fabric– 2018 – This unusual ghost story is set around a department store during the busy winter sales season, and it follows the path of destruction connected to one red dress. Hayley Squires ( Call the Midwife), Julian Barratt ( The Mighty Boosh), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste ( Broadchurch) all appear. Tubi, Pluto, or streaming rental. Catie, Catie (October 31, 2012). "Why Don't They Just Leave? Revisiting The Haunting of Hill House". full-stop.net . Retrieved October 16, 2018. Undoubtedly, the film borrows heavily from other ghost and spirit films, most notably The Shining, but it was almost like playing bingo, identifying tropes from other films as it progressed, such as The Exorcist, Don't Look Now, etc. The TV movie feel and austere feel of the grand old house give a 1970s drama feel to the film. Some may associated this with quality drama, some with cheap production values.

The House That Dripped Blood – 1971 – This creepy classic anthology film includes stars Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Ingrid Pitt. It sees a Scotland Yard Inspector investigating a haunted mansion while trying to find a missing film star. As the history of the house unfolds, we get four stories of terror and mystery involving previous tenants. Tubi, Pluto, or streaming rental. The Canterville Ghost Overall The Haunting of Radcliffe House is a decent enough spook fest, which is a bit too much of a ‘best of haunted house films’ compilation than an original masterpiece to be particularly memorable going forwards, but it’s still worth seeing despite that for the good performances of the cast, especially the female cast members.I went to the owners of the house and I said ‘Is it possible there’s a woman in white?’ And they said: ‘A woman in white, yeah. We haven’t seen her for a year or two but she appears in that one room.’ Interestingly enough in our film we also had a woman in white, and for our real woman in white, our wardrobe designer had actually hand-stitched her white gown. Creepy!” The plot goes like this – couple with children move into old mansion with a history, father gets possessed by ghost of crazy old owner, mother discovers an underground altar, kids run about and scream, an ‘expert’ comes to visit and sees something terrible, big chase and if you’ve seen The Amityville Horror then you’ve seen the final 10 minutes of this. As for the acting in the movie, well Olivia Williams and Matthew Modine definitely carried the movie quite well.

While we were filming in the house we had the wardrobe people in one room so they could put all the costumes up and people could get changed. Our costume designer had a side room – and he saw a woman in white appear. He was quite a cool guy, and I said, ‘Have you ever seen ghosts before?’ He said, ‘Yeah, well, I’m sort of in tune with these things,’ so I said ‘What did she look like?’ and he described her. When it comes to ghost stories focused on haunted houses my personal favourites are The Haunting and The Legend of Hell House, the psychological scares make them genuinely creepy and most importantly effective. The Haunting of Radcliffe House (also known as Altar) which has recently been released on DVD makes an attempt to scare its audience in classic ways, is it be effective? I know horror works better if the main part of the story is believable and relatable, therefore, based on ordinary life. Though there are plenty of boring people around, in ordinary life (I know a few - bet you do too), it's not advisable to make the majority of your story characters dull. But this is the major hindrance in this film. If they were more interesting and active this could have carried and strengthened the film. The atmosphere in the movie was adequate, and definitely had potential to add a lot of flavor to the movie. But this wasn't really properly utilized, and it just sort of fizzled without any greater effect.Witchfinder General– 1968 – Vincent Price stars in this classic historical horror film set during the English Civil War. It follows a young soldier determined to stop a vicious witch hunter who terrorised his lover and her uncle. Hilary Dwyer ( The Prisoner) and Rupert Davies ( Maigret) also appear. Sadly, Dwyer passed away in 2020 due to complications of COVID-19. AMC+ or Shudder. Crooked House While the film isn’t as successful in creating scares as I would have hoped, I still found The Haunting of Radcliffe House to be an easy watch, especially on repeated viewings (I watched it when it was shown on Channel 5 in the UK too). With an actual attempt at not being just another run of the mill ghost story it is well worth a watch. Just expect to be more intrigued rather than actually scared. a b Fassler, Joe (October 12, 2017). "How Surrealism Enriches Storytelling About Women". The Atlantic . Retrieved August 15, 2019.
