Work your way down through the modes and your run times increase, of course, all the way to 14.5 hours for just the 55-lumen DRL strip. If you're aiming to ride all night you'll be stretching the ALLTY 2000's limits on one charge – the DRL strip doesn't really give enough light to ride by. Fall is officially here, and it’s beginning to show. As the days grow shorter and it becomes more and more difficult to squeeze in a ride after work, you might want to consider embracing the dark (if you haven’t already). Night riding allows you to put in some miles whenever you can find time, and it’s a great way to mix up your typical ride if it’s starting to become a little stale. Included in the box is a helmet mount, and we think the X-Power works best as a lid light. It has four steady and two flashing modes, plus an SOS mode.

For urban commuting, 200 lumens should be sufficient. We would suggest a front light with a minimum of 400 lumens for riding on unlit roads. Our test unit’s thermal throttling was quite sensitive, and after two minutes of being stationary with the light on max power in 14°C temperatures, it reduced output to the middle setting.

Once the way it works is imprinted into your mind, operation isn’t hugely challenging, though. The battery indicator works well and it remained in boost mode until nearing the very end of its battery’s capacity, only reducing its output once the last battery indicator LED started flashing. The NiteRider Lumina Dual 1800 front light has great power and beam spread for its price. Georgina Hinton Trek looks to mix off-road and road use with its Kindbeam tech, designed to avoid dazzling other road users (although not StVZO-compliant). It still offers 1,000 lumens for trail riders, although illumination isn’t as effective as a dedicated MTB light. While pre-programmed with 6 modes, you can customise these to suit your needs with Knog’s Modemaker app – control brightness, adjust runtimes and add modes.

The power of a bike light is usually expressed in lumens. Lumens are the unit by which the total amount of light emitted from a source is measured. It’s an easy light to use, with five default modes and an additional three that can be accessed. Our only gripe is the unit tended to shift closer to the ground on rougher terrain.
Although it’s easy to tap the on/off button to show the battery life indicator, you have to cycle through all nine modes to change from low to high beam. As its looks suggest, the main selling point of the Knog Cobber Mid rear light is side-on visibility, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

Even though the mount is only compatible with 31.8mm bars, I managed to position it on several 35mm diameter handlebars near to their bend. While this isn’t recommended, and proved to be quite frustrating, it is a workable solution for those who want an Ara and own 35mm handlebars. The internal battery is quite small, so you only get an hour’s run time at full power. It’s not the most sophisticated looking light we’ve tested either, but it easily outperforms its price tag and competes with many of the more expensive lights we’ve tested.The brightness of your bike light should be determined by the type of riding that you’ll be doing. Whether you’re riding on trails, road, lighted streets are all factors to weight when selecting a bike light with the necessary brightness for your needs. The saddle rail attachment isn’t universal and dirt can get trapped in the light – so have your sponge at the ready.
