About this deal

The image stabilization performance for minor shakes when shooting videos with THETA attached to a monopod, etc. has been improved.

It is now possible to select “5.7K (10 fps)” and “5.7K (2 fps)” for the video size in the shooting settings on the camera. You can’t edit or transfer the results to a smartphone via the app, which merely displays a thumbnail of 5.7K 30fps and 4K 60fps video. The only way to deal with it is to get it off the device by cabling it up to a laptop and editing it with Ricoh’s desktop software. That software is very basic, doing little more than letting you zoom in and out of 360º photos and straighten it. It’s a shame it can’t recrop 5.7K 30 fps footage into regular 16:9 content. Spherical video files converted using RICOHTHETA for Windows/Mac are compatible with the 360 video formaton YouTube. MP4 files converted using RICOHTHETA for Windows/Mac ("version 1.10.0" or later) can be uploaded to YouTube, and viewed and scrolled withinYouTube’s PC and Android apps. It’s not waterproof. There are some 360 cameras that are waterproof. Theta X is not. And it doesn’t have a lens protector either. I’ve been using the Z1 for a few years and can confirm that the larger sensors do make a difference. I’ve been able to shoot astrophotography with the Z1 as well as very attractive indoor shots that have excellent colour and dynamic range. Ricoh has a series of plugins available for their Theta cameras which adds new features and functionality to their cameras. Many of these plugins are made by Ricoh themselves but others are made by the community. Both of these cameras are primarily designed for photography. This is unique among consumer 360 cameras, most of which are heavily focussed on video. Great quality 360 photos should be high resolution to maintain sharpness and details, avoid over exposure in bright areas and have great dynamic range. To answer the question, the Ricoh Theta X is a great camera for shooting virtual tours, however it is not necessarily a choice for those starting a virtual tour business.

Added a function for posting videos shot with the RICOH THETA (model: RICOHTHETA m15) to theta360.com. Overheating. If you record at room temperature, it can overheat. Mine stopped recording at 13:50 when I recorded at room temperature. Built-in GPS. Photos can be geotagged, which helps when you upload them to Google Street View or virtual tour software. Excellent, very accurate colors. This camera has one of the best, if not the best colors I’ve seen for a consumer 360 camera. It can accurately reproduce even difficult colors like bright red.

Although the headline act for the Theta X is hi-res 360° videos with image stabilization, the two top resolutions – 5.7K 30fps and 4K 60fps, both with IS – cannot be controlled from the app at all. To use either of those you’re effectively app-less, needing to operate the Theta X solely from the device itself. It’s also not possible to shoot either of those top resolutions while the WiFi is switched-on. The Theta Z1 is an easy choice if you want the best quality in terms of visual appeal, which I admit for many is still more important. It may be the case that the Theta X is updated via software to include a RAW mode in the future, in which case it would become by far the better option. Other Features

By using the basic app for smartphone, the settings can be switched even while the RICOH THETA X is attached to the TW-2. The Theta X features two 1/2 inch sensors in its dual lenses. It can shoot 360 photos at a maximum resolution of 60 megapixels, which is a huge size compared to other all in one 360 cameras. While the sensor size is a downgrade from the Theta Z1 which features 1 Inch sensors, the resolution of the images is far higher. On the screen you can also control detailed shooting settings, cutting out the need for the smartphone app. Plus, with TFT colour and auto-brightness adjustment, the touchscreen panel brings your 360º creations to life in whole a new way. The W58 frequency range cannot be used in countries and regions other than Taiwan because the wireless certification related to the W58 frequency range has not been acquired. Relative position information based on self-position estimation (this is not position information from a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System))

Ricoh Theta X (reviewed here) is the first 360 camera to offer 5.7K video with stabilization with no stitching required. It also captures 11K photos, one of the highest resolutions available for consumer 360 cameras. One of the other major issues with 360° cameras is that the content creator struggles to themselves get out of the image. Cue ‘Time Shift’ on the Theta X, which works when you put the camera on a tripod (there’s a 1/4-inch tripod thread on its underside) or on a flat surface and let it take two photos. Although the announcement doesn’t specifically state that the THETA X will work with the USB API, all the recent THETA models support the USB API. I suspect that the THETA X will also support it. See our article on the USB API for development tips we’ve organized for existing RICOH THETA models. Web API
