I found this an 80% jacket – there were only 20% of days I didn’t wear it… It was layering again, unlike pile/pertex, but I found it so adaptable, so quick to dry, well cut and just brilliant.

One of other suggestion for people thinking about Buff/montane is to wear a driclime or similar as the baselayer. Up until then, the combined fleece and Pertex layers were more than capable and moisture soon wicked out. Once I got the belay jacket in addition to the big face buffalo, I stopped using a hardshell in Scotland.In addition to the overall breathability of the jacket, Montane have added two interior vents to aid rapid venting. In reply to eirenutter: I am now 3months into my extreme smock challenge and would not be in the hills without it. For optimum lightweight comfort and performance it should be worn against the skin or over a fast wicking technical layer such as the Bionic. It’s generally not as supple as other insulation stuff (down or primaloft) so won’t conform to your body as easily. The Hydrogen features a fairly long, slim fit which is designed to sit close to your skin to maximise sweat management.
