About this deal

I enjoyed both books until the final pages, where the directions in which Patchett took both stories effectively severed my emotional connection to them — a rather disappointing conclusion to any book! Becoming accustomed to sad endings may be more naive than believing, now and then, in happily ever after.

The Magician’s Assistant” by Ann Patchett Thoughts on “The Magician’s Assistant” by Ann Patchett

This can be done most obviously through switching roles, but this is harder than it sounds, as the practicalities of performing stage tricks are also gendered in subtle and not so subtle ways. Then again, I didn’t absolutely fall head over heels for State of Wonder in the first place, so perhaps I didn’t have as much at stake as a reader. Colluding with an audience that wants to believe, the magician’s assistant has her own armoury of tricks to help maintain the illusion. She’s a new narrator to me, but I liked the way her cool, polished voice matched the way I imagined Sabine. Nazrak sheds the disguise and demands the wand; Todd tries picking up the phone, but only hears Nazrak's voice at the other end.A contradiction in herself, the beautiful Sabine has rejected many admirers to devote her entire adult life to loving Parsifal, assisting his magic act and finally helping him tend his dying Vietnamese lover, Phan. Marker asks Todd what happened to the potted plant, but as he fumbles an explanation, he sees a note on his mother's desk thanking him for the illustrations, which she has taken to the office immediately - and he realises Nazrak has taken the form of his mother.

Marker stops by the supermarket, and we see her walking down the alleyways toward their apartment building with a single paper bag of groceries that includes a baguette, a bunch of celery with leafy green tops, and an assortment of oranges and grapefruits that have not been put in a produce bag, so they spill out of the paper bag when the bottom inevitably tears. As the assistant in a comedy magic show, the constant direct engagement with the audience and use of audience volunteers was a total departure from my previous experience as an actor. arsifal is dead,'' reads the startling opening of ''The Magician's Assistant,'' Ann Patchett's third novel. While I did really like it, I think I might have liked it even better if I hadn’t been measuring it against something I loved so much.

For readers who have had similarly disappointing experiences with Ann Patchett’s novels, The Magician’s Assistant is different enough that I’d recommend it as a nice change of pace. I have had good luck with Patchett in the past, and I have been wanting another recommendation from her collection, so this came at a good time for me. Since more than 350 pages follow, the reader has been fairly warned to expect surprises and a few contradictions. Despite the fact that she is often absolutely key to the success of the trick in more ways than one, the magician’s assistant is rarely presented as having creative agency of her own. She tells Todd the wand has special powers - contrary to Shandu's instructions, he can use it whenever he pleases.

If it is hard not to squint at some of the flashy paradoxes Patchett uses to construct her narrative, then perhaps a struggle with credulity is precisely what she wants to encourage. The magician, Shandu the Magnificent, or just Shandu for short, lives in a wagon full of magical paraphernalia, including a three-foot Magic Wand made of interwoven sticks. This curiously fraught situation becomes more so once it is revealed that Parsifal had a secret history. Unfortunately, I loaned my copy to a friend (along with The Patron Saint of Liars) several years ago and never got either back. She can use different areas of the stage to make the audience move their heads as well as their eyes away from what the magician is doing, and she can create distractions and reactions that seem entirely spontaneous, despite being meticulously timed and planned.

At first, I didn’t think I’d be able to connect much with Sabine, a glamorous magician’s assistant living the a cushy life in Los Angeles with her husband and his gay lover (I’ll let you read the book yourself to learn about that situation). The audience can’t see me but I catch glimpses of them through tiny cracks in the wood, the stage lights reflecting in their wide eyes. When Gary snarks about the Midnight Society members all being on time for once, Frank compares him to his dull homeroom teacher, Mr. I found the best way to control a volunteer was to ‘claim’ them with an item of clothing, a prop or an accessory to make them immediately part of the onstage world and discourage them from deliberately trying to pull focus. He then hears Shandu's voice and sees the magician's face in the reflective surface of the toaster; he urges Todd to use the rules of magic to defeat Nazrak. I was surprised to find that many magicians choose not to speak on stage, instead relying on mime and music to tell the story of a trick. Todd Marker's father has passed away, while his mother struggles to make ends meet by designing storyboard art for advertisements, so he aims to help her financially by answering a part-time job listing for a magician's assistant. Now that I work as a solo act, I know that my time as a magician’s assistant gave me the confidence to emerge on stage as not just a surprise or a novelty, but as a skilled performer capable of making the magic happen herself. Sealed Good in a Can: When Shandu is trapped in the vortex, he appears in a reflection to advise Todd.
